The Green Train represents a groundbreaking collaboration between sustainable transport, ecological restoration, and cultural engagement.
The Green Train brings together the Finnish artist Nina Backman’s Silence Project, and the enviroment Project A Million Trees to Finland together with European Sleeper, and a network of environmental partners to create a unique art-driven journey across borders.
At its heart is a simple idea: travel more slowly, listen more deeply, and act more boldly for the planet by planting trees. The train becomes a moving venue for reflection, conversation, and creativity, while tree planting along the route offers a tangible, lasting legacy. The collaboration blends sustainable transport, ecological restoration, and cultural engagement into a single experience—one that connects people to landscapes, to communities, and to the quiet urgency of climate action. The program includes tree planting , seedling events, seminars and workshops along the way.
The Future Vision is to grow the Green Train routes in Europe, and make it a yearly event. Our aim is to make it a commonplace and celebrated to have a designated Green Train delivering tree, as well as educational programs on sustainability contemporary art, in all of our train networks.
This pilot program serves as an effective, high-profile initiative to increase awareness of environmental challenges and deepen people’s sense of connection with their own region’s natural environment. Passenger trains are a natural platform for this, in part because they can help underline the key role that trains will play in creating a sustainable future. The Green Train is a new and innovative way of connecting diverse partners via trainlines, sharing environmental information, community tree planting, and contemporary
